Carol Moriarty of Gainesville, FL almost lost over $128,000 to a timeshare company.

My parents had been timesharing since I was a young child. I grew up visiting many places without having to stay in a hotel and enjoying several vacations each year.
Dad had taken an early retirement so that freed up my parents to travel pretty often.
Mom and Dad enjoyed being part of the "timeshare club" which they felt was pretty exclusive. They would talk with other timesharing couples and swap stories, give tips on where to stay, and just generally participate in the whole timesharing community.
Everything changed after my dad passed away. He was sick for a while, so mom was caring for him while he was in and out of the hospital. Travel was the last thing on their minds during this time.
About 4 months after dad passed away and my mom was still sorting through all of the finances, she was hit with a bombshell...
The timeshare: after 35 years of being transferred, bought out, re configured with various timeshare entities, the fees were almost $8,000 PER YEAR!
$8,000! You could take at least two nice vacations for $8,000 per year, no timeshare needed!
But the $8,000 in yearly fees was the least of mom's worries.

The timeshare company started calling. Over and over, they were calling her every day. It was painful for mom, because dad had just passed and the timeshare company had ZERO concern.
They needed her to sign some documents to transfer the timeshare to her name and that's all they cared about.
Ultimately the timeshare company convinced mom to purchase more points. They said it was a good deal because she could use them for maintenance fees.
Within the next month, notaries started showing up at the house unannounced. They were sent by the timeshare resort.
The notaries (probably employees of the timeshare company) demanded that my mom let them see my dad's death certificate, sign some transfer papers, and of course buy more points.
Now keep in mind, my mom is the sweetest lady in the world. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She has a hard time saying NO.
Plus, even though the timeshare company was behaving in a terrible way, she still trusted them. (Dad was the one who always would handle this stuff when he was alive. She thought this was normal)

Then, everything came crashing down...
When January came around, my mom was shocked to find the fees had nearly doubled and she was on the hook for $15,000 every single year.
Mom was also paying $3,800 per month which turned out to be for three separate loans from the timeshare that they claimed she opened to get more points.
In total with 14% interest mom owed $128,000!!!
She had to use all of my dad’s insurance money to pay them off, plus refinance her house. She has so many points she cannot use them all.
You could be on vacation for over a year with the amount of points my mom has, but no one in our family went on vacation in 2020 and only one vacation worked out in 2021.
She has been in the process of trying to exit this scheme but you cannot talk to their “transitions team” with any reservations on the books.
She couldn't find a lawyer that can do anything to them in the state of Nevada.
She paid the maintenance fees again last year since she didn’t know what else to do.
But then a miracle happened...
I call it a miracle because it was so random, I think the Good Lord above, dad, or some outside force helped us when we needed it most.
"Mom saw a post on Facebook that said, 'timeshare companies forced to refund illegal fees' so of course she clicked it."
The website she went to asked for her timeshare company name and some other details. She filled out the form and waited.
About 5 mins later she got a call from someone named Margo Royals.
Margo was a timeshare cancellation rep from Stonegate Firm. Margo told my mom that she could help, but mom needed to sign up for their services.
So mom went through the process, signed the documents, and was told to wait.
A few weeks later mom started getting mail from attorneys. But these weren't timeshare company attorneys. They were HER attorneys.
